Kumano-shi Station 熊野市駅
Kumano-shi Station in Kumano city is a JR station on the Kisei Line in southern Mie Prefecture. The main connections are south to Shingu and north to Owase Station and Nagoya Station. The first express train to Kumano-shi Station from Nagoya is the 8.05 am Wide View Nanki that arrives in Kumano-shi at 11.13 am. The present fare is 7,050 yen.
Attractions in Kumano
Kumano is a good base to explore the attractions of the surrounding area which include hiking over Matsumoto-toge Pass, the bizarrely-shaped cliffs of Onigajo Rocks, the huge, pebbled Shichirimihama Beach, Hana no Iwaya Shrine and the weird Shishi rock formation.
Buses
Regular buses (which are cheaper than the train) from the Meitetsu bus station at Meitetsu Nagoya Station run to Shingu via Kumano. Buses back to Nagoya leave from behind the Tourist Information Center opposite Kumano-shi Station. Other buses from Kumano Station run to Shingu (50 minutes) and the Seiryu-so Onsen near the beautiful Kitayama River (also about 50 minutes).
There are Mie Kotsu buses from the bus stop across the road from the station to Kiwa-cho Mine Museum and Seiryu-so Onsen. From Seiryu-so it is a short walk to the Little Britain World War II memorial.
Visitors traveling south from Owase Station, Kumano Station, and Nagoya Station to the north need to change trains at Shingu Station to reach Taiji Station in Wakayama Prefecture further south.
